The ground-level footprint of 200 S Wacker presented architectural contradictions that left the space feeling disjointed: a compressed mezzanine abruptly transitioned into a vast, double-height atrium, while the adjacent outdoor terrace remained disconnected from the interior flow. Building ownership sought to reimagine the area into a cohesive tenant amenity that offered comfort, functionality, and visual impact. Additionally, the design had to harmonize with a recently renovated building lobby while establishing its own personality.
geniant’s design strategy embraced contrast as a narrative tool. On the mezzanine side, a dark, intimate bar and café nook were introduced—featuring plush booth seating, dramatic wall finishes, and custom sconces for moody ambiance. Toward the atrium, natural light was amplified through lighter finishes, rounded seating clusters, and a material palette of marble, soft grays, and polished brass. The central hospitality bar served as an anchor, tying both zones together. Thoughtfully selected furnishings and lighting created moments of warmth and flow, while enabling multi-modal use for casual meetings, work, and relaxation.
