Brainspace, now part of a $200m investment-backed organization, has a mission to give small legal teams the power to connect the dots and draw confident conclusions when faced with massive (and ever-growing) unstructured data sets.

Mining millions of data points is one thing; another is visually displaying the data efficiently and meaningfully. The challenge for geniant was to make sure to surface this incredible technical power in an elegant and intuitive experience.

Process & Solution

Brainsapce makes breakthrough machine-learning software that automatically analyzes massive amounts of unstructured data, recognizing words and phrases and their context and meaning. But when this amazing tech makes its way to small legal teams, we need to transform all this unstructured data into fact-based insights, ensuring that all relevant data can be seen, explored, and rendered actionable.

One area of focus for the team was search. While most users are accustomed to doing specific keyword searches, Brainspace allows users to search with words, phrases, or entire documents to find conceptually similar content. Here we redesigned without overwhelming the user by displaying a list of expanded concepts with a visual representation of their relevance using adjustable sliders, which refine results in real-time.

Brainspace also offers state-of-the-art communication analysis, but like all other aspects of large, unstructured data sets, they face challenges with both usability and performance. The team at geniant rethought the design and built an all-new visualization in WebGL, improving performance by over 100x. Communication Analysis is now one of Brainspace's most valuable and most-used features in digital investigations.

Overall, our teams found ways to dramatically increase efficiency and productivity while reducing the number of legal professionals required to perform these time-intensive and error-prone tasks.
