Before the experimental retailer Story was acquired by Macy's, they needed to reinvent their shop with new innovative concepts constantly. Story was looking for their next concept in this innovative rotating experience that housed brands like School of Life, Blu Dot, and LaFleur. geniant's own Chief Architect, David Dewane, worked with Story's founder to define the installation "Work/Space," one of the more thoughtful concepts focused on Aristotle's concept of eudaimonia, meaning the epitome of human capability.
To Dewane, human eudaimonia is best achieved during times of "deep work," a concept that originated in Cal Newport's book of the same name. The team ideated on the question, "What would be a space that's the ideal work environment?".
We know from research that in your average (pre-pandemic) workspace, you come in, get coffee, chat with your coworkers, then maybe do a bit of work and get lunch.
The final concept was a multipart floor plan that effectively funnels employees through various spaces with the intention of triggering different mental states. The layout consists of an entry gallery, a social salon, a multi-person office, an archival library, and the chamber—a site for deep work. The concept doesn't look to eliminate the social aspects of the workspace—instead, it aims to optimize them and separate them from deep work.

Ahead of its time, this concept for how modern workplaces should function only gathered more steam post-pandemic. More than ever, intentional spaces for teams need to be created and defined for each company and its culture. This was a great showcase of the principles of workplace optimization combined with modern technology - and led to the successful acquisition of Story by Macy's.
